American Soldier Teaches New Converts In Baghdad

Feature Stories

The life of a soldier involves many things: training, sacrifice, serving, and above all, the unexpected. When he left the USA, Jerry did not expect his mission in Iraq to be teaching former Muslims the foundations of the Christian faith. However, as a Global University undergraduate student in the U.S. Army, that is exactly what he has been doing.

Jerry enrolled in the course--Introduction to Missions and as he came to the service learning requirement for this course, to plan, prepare, and carry out an outreach to evangelize people from another culture, he realized that God had a greater mission for him in Iraq. As a result of this assignment, a group of former Muslims in Baghdad, Iraq, who also happened to be interpreters for the U.S. Army, received a foundational course in Christianity and the Bible.

The class was held for a six month period to ensure the group had a solid biblical and spiritual foundation. Jerry taught Christian basics such as accepting Jesus Christ as Lord, how to use the Bible, the importance of daily prayers, and the studying of God’s Word. He did not approach the project as though he were in charge, but rather, he asked God to humble him so that he could be a servant of the Iraqi people.

Jerry states that many of the converts were baptized as well. Following this emotional experience, they returned to their relatives to share the good news. The families of these students either accepted the truth of the Gospel or rejected the message along with the messenger.

Pray for these new believers in Iraq that Jerry had the privilege of training. They will need the support of fellow believers as they boldly step out to proclaim the Gospel among their families and neighbors.
This college-level student says the most important thing he learned from the experience is the fact that God fills us with the very thing others need, and then He also gives us the courage to share it, no matter where we are.

Global University equips students with the tools necessary to share the Gospel message with those around them. Are you willing to make yourself available to be used by God? Are you equipped to do the work of God among those who are lost and dying around you? Join Global today in praying for our students who are making an impact worldwide or consider studying with us. You can make a difference!
