SPRINGFIELD, Missouri- Dr. Joe Szabo, who serves as Global University’s Vice President of Global Operations, recently traveled to the campus of the East Africa School of Theology (EAST) to teach a Global University masters level course on Islam and Animism.
Twelve pastors and leaders from the countries of Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda attended the class. The majority of these countries have significant Muslim populations that need to hear the Gospel message. Teaching these church leaders about Muslims and animists and providing strategies for reaching them will help them develop effective outreach ministry in their nations.
In addition to teaching, Joe also preached in a local Nairobi church, recently opened within the last five years, resulting in 4 decisions for Christ. He also oversaw the training of new graduate studies school directors, led by Miki Ausbury, Applications/Enrollment Coordinator for Global’s Graduate School of Theology.
Joe’s trip home to the US happened to coincide with the major fire that shut down the airport in Nairobi three days before he was scheduled to depart. Because of this, Joe experienced a 17 hour bus trip through the back roads of Kenya to an airport in Uganda, where he was then rerouted on an 8 hour flight to Brussels, Belgium. From Brussels, he flew to Zurich, Switzerland, and from there to Chicago, IL and then into Springfield, MO. His total travel time was 66 hours.
Though the trip was arduous, Joe commented, “This type of journey is typical for our African students. They often travel days to receive their Biblical training at one of our Global University Graduate Study Groups. Having experienced this long journey home makes the sacrifice of our students time and energy to receive ministry training through Global University that much more meaningful.”
