SPRINGFIELD, Missouri- The Spanish Eastern School of Theology (SEST) based in the Bronx, New York is expanding to other cities in order to satisfy the demand to equip more Assembly of God Hispanic ministers. SEST is owned by the Spanish Eastern District in Old Tappan, New Jersey and it is also an authorized study group with Global University.
Currently the Spanish Eastern School of Theology is serving the New York metropolitan area, Philadelphia and New England. The school also plans to serve Connecticut, Tennessee and Kentucky.
According to Virginia Maldonado, Education Department Director for the Spanish Eastern District, the school was founded with the vision to provide a Spanish language Bible school for adults who could not go to a traditional seminary.
“We are excited to see what God is doing with our school. We wanted to have a Spanish Bible school for adult learners because too many of them could not go to an English language seminary,” said Maldonado. “The school was founded to serve the educational needs of pastors and lay workers but now the school is opened for everyone.”
After 27 years in ministry, the school is considering offering classes in English as well. However many of the younger workers who are English dominant speakers are furthering their own education. “Once these workers are trained, we will be poised to offer more English language courses,” said Maldonado.
According to Denise Alvarez, Academic Dean for the Spanish Eastern School of Theology, the school allows people with full-time jobs to be able to attend school part-time. “Many of our students have full-time secular jobs, so being able to attend our school part-time is an important benefit,” said Alvarez. “Currently the Spanish Eastern District offers several education opportunities through our Bible institutes, the Spanish Eastern School of the Theology and Global University, where students can complete an accredited undergraduate degree in Bible and Theology in Spanish.”
“The Spanish Eastern School of Theology has been a wonderful partner for Global University. Together, we are serving the ministry training needs of Hispanic workers for the Kingdom,” said Dr. Randy Hedlun Dean of Berean School of the Bible.
The Spanish Eastern School of Theology requires their faculty to have an educational attainment of at least a Masters Degree. “Our partnership with the Spanish Eastern School of Theology is very significant in the sense that the school needs to continue equipping their future faculty and Global University can provide the higher education requirements for their faculty,” said Dr. Gary Seevers, President of Global University. “We are delighted about our partnership with the Spanish Eastern School of Theology and can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for our combined future.”
Denise Alvarez also explained that currently many of the students from the Spanish Eastern School of Theology come from different countries and Global University’s undergraduate program in Spanish can be a blessing to these students. According to Maldonado, the Spanish Eastern School of Theology structures their classes in 4 cycles throughout the year. Currently the school has 65 students enrolled with 91 contact hours. Classes are taught on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The next enrollment cycle starts on April 2 for Mondays, April 4 for Wednesdays and April 7 for Saturdays.
About the Spanish Eastern School of Theology
Based in the Bronx New York, the Spanish Eastern School of Theology (SEST) was established in 1984 to prepare Hispanic leaders for ministry. The school filled an educational gap at the time, by offering Spanish language courses in the New York Metropolitan Area.
