SPRINGFIELD, Missouri- Dr. Ron Iwasko, beloved former President of Global University, who served the institution from 1999 to 2006, has graduated from this earth into the arms of his Savior after a battle with leukemia. He was 78 years old.
Dr. Ron and his wife, Kathy, were married on September 22, 1956 and moved to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. While on base, Ron and Kathy sensed God’s leading to enter full time ministry, and Ron enrolled in Central Bible College. Upon his graduation, the couple moved to Skokie, IL, where Ron took a senior pastor position.
The Iwaskos then felt the call of God to train national pastors in Brazil, precipitated by a conversation with a missionary whereby they learned of this great need. They were approved as Assemblies of God world missionaries to Brazil in 1971. In July of 1973, Dr. Ron established Ceara Bible Institute of the Assemblies of God, an extension school for pastors lacking formal Bible training.
In 1976, Ron was named Director of Personnel and Family Life for AGWM, and the family moved to Springfield, MO, where he served for 14 years. In 1990, Ron became the AGWM Director of Foreign Missions Research.
Sensing a new call of God, Ron and his family moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1993 to direct the Carlson Institute, the distance education division of North Central University. He later chaired the Cross Cultural Ministries Department of North Central that trained college students for missionary service.
Ron and Kathy renewed their missionary appointment when he was asked to serve as the President of Global University in 1999, and the family moved back to Springfield, MO so Ron could pursue this new assignment. Under his leadership, many advancements took place in the Undergraduate School of Bible and Theology and the Graduate School of Theology, as well as significant course revisions to the Berean School of the Bible curriculum. Ron served at Global University until 2006, where he and Kathy then served with AGWM’s Africa’s Hope.
Ron served as an educational consultant focused on training Pentecostal pastors, and briefly moved to Swaziland in 2008 to establish an extension school of ministry, focused on training rural pastors. After 36 years of faithful service with AGWM, Ron officially retired from his missionary work in December of 2013.
“Dr. Ron truly embraced the mission of Global University – that is, to win the lost and train the found, everywhere!” reflects Dr. Gary Seevers, President of Global University. “Heaven has gained a passionate and wonderful pioneer of the faith, and we at Global University will always be appreciative of his dedication and service to our institution.”
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Green Lawn East Funeral Home, 3540 E. Seminole, Springfield, MO 65809 from 5:00pm-8:00pm (CST).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at James River Church South in the Clark Chapel, 6100 North 19th St., Ozark, MO 65721 at 1:30pm (CST).
